    My dad died a senior citizen, and my mum died a senior citizen too.
    I know you will be wondering by now what this guy means by ‘Senior citizen’.
    Senior citizens are not people in high positions in government establishments neither are they people who have made it in the private sectors.
    Rather ‘Senior citizens are those people who have actively served this country in one form or the other but are now ‘Retired’
    THEY ARE THE PENSIONERS
    Do you know why they are called ‘Senior citizens’?

    Actually, senior citizens are not the pensioners. They may be pensioners but not all senior citizens are retirees from private or public organisations. Some of them were self-employed, lost their jobs and never got another, and so on. Calling someone a senior citizen means he is old, probably in his late sixties and above. The link to ‘pensioners’ is because, according to the general convention, a person retires around 60/65.

    My father is about 95. He is a senior citizen though he never worked for anyone all through his life.

    There could be as many reasons as to why they are called that, but in my opinion, I think it’s because they have served their fatherland and succeeded, and also have reached or attained the age of 60 years and above

    @Femi- Good to hear.
    Your dad is a senior senior citizen.
    That’s why I love FILTERED THOUGHTS. We learn a lot from here.
    I was also thinking as well that senior citizens are those old men and women and that they call pensioners ‘Senior citizens’ because they are old.
    Thank you so much for enlightening me on this.

    I think if you lived most of your working life in Nigeria and gets to 60 or 70years in your self employment or government worker then you deserve to be titled a senior citizen.

    Because even as self-employed, one way or the other you and your business must have contributed positively to the country which is one of the duties of a “citizen” and the prefix of “senior” is entitled by the age.
